Tocqueville and the Importance of American Civic Engagement

Alexis de Tocqueville, a French aristocrat, arrived in 1831 in the USA for a grand tour of the country. From his notes, he wrote the political science classic Democracy in America.

In regards to civic engagement, Tocqueville wrote, "Better use has been made of association, and this powerful instrument of action has been applied to more varied aims in America, than anywhere else in the world."

Thankfully, that tradition is continuing in America, particularly in the political arena.

My guest Jack May, president of the Manatee County Patriots, joins me for a discussion of the importance of civic engagement to protect "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" in the American Republic.
